I need your suggestions.

After conferring with Chris this afternoon, I’ve decided to pick up a compact 9mm. Problem is, I’m not exactly sure what I want. I know I would like something bigger than my Bersa, but not anything as big as a 92FS. No Glock or Sig – I’m just not a fan of either brand. Chris suggested an M&P, XD, or CZ.

I’d consider polymer though I’m a big fan of all metal.

Also trying to stick to no more than $600.

Given these requirements, what would you buy, and why?

Saw a sweet Colt 1911, silver (hard chrome) with gold accents that was a 9mm the other day – the slimness compared to my Sigs, they're like porky now…
I'm gonna have to go back and take another look at it.

eh…i don't think i'd want to consider a 1911 for carry, especially when there are plenty of other options out there.

    'sides, i already have a 1911. 😉

  3. North says:

I've fired a Beretta PX4 Storm. I think it is a helluva nice gun to fire. I wasn't putting much effort into accuracy – just getting the feel of the gun – but made a group of 5″ at 50'.

Smith & Wesson M&P 9? Polymer, but it'd probably be my 1st choice as far as reasonably priced polymer pistols go.

Though I'd take an HKP30 over it were the prices equal.

North – Chris likes Beretta quite a bit, and I think it would make him very happy if I were to join the Beretta fan club. 😛 We'll see, though – it really depends on how much I like from the medium-sized 9mm market. I'm going to take advantage of the Pittsburgh trip (and all the companies that will be showcasing their stuff) to handle as much as I can.

Mike – I think Michael used an M&P 9 as the model pistol in my purse. It's on the list as a possibility. 🙂

  6. Ruger SR9 (and soon to be legal in MD, SR 9 c).

Though, Between an XD (or even XDm) and a Glock, I'd go Glock (and I own an XD).

FNX-9 (which is a DA/SA 9mm). Else, you are looking at M&P, GLock, XD, Taurus (meh),

  7. Mike W. says:

    Mmm, I wouldn't mind owning a Beretta 92G Elite II. I do kinda need a fullsized 9mm…

The FNP's are nice guns as well. Not sure how that carries over to the new FNX line.

And I would buy a Walther P99 right now if I could find an older true German model (pre S&W)

For my first comment on this blog, lets make it good…

Firestorm Mini 9. Made by the Bersa folks, all metal, VERY compact for what it is, conceals easily, and is a very tame gun given the weight. Not lots of muzzle flip, target acquisition in rapid-fire is really good.

Did I mention its all metal?

Bought mine off Gunbroker last year. Paid $325 plus shipping and FFL transfer fees.

    And dig this…its ALL METAL!

    Dragon 🙂

  9. Laura says:

FBH: like I mentioned the other day, no Glocks. 😛 I'll check out FN, though.

Mike – Good call on the older Walther. I'll keep them in mind.

Dragon – First off, welcome! I'm looking for higher capacity than what Bersa/Firestorm has to offer, though I do appreciate the suggestion. I'm a bigbigBIG fan of my Firestorm .380, so I definitely would consider a 9mm version if I didn't already have mine. It's a fabulous little gun.

  10. DirtCrashr says:

    It's a Combat Commander so it's not a full-size 1911, but the consignment wants way too-much anyhow. 🙂
The M&P 9mm seems very popular.

  11. Laura says:

Consignment shops do seem to overprice stuff like that, don't they?

That M&P will be on the list of things I manhandle soon.

  12. tbastian says:

Tanfoglio Witness Compact. Maybe bigger than you like but above average accuracy, very reliable, all metal, and well under your $600 limit. I paid $436.oo

  13. Laura says:

tbastian – thanks for the rec, but I handled one today and absolutely hated the trigger. It felt cheap.

Right now, I'm seriously considering the PX4 Storm and the CZ75 compact.
